2017 Learning Engagement Conference
The Greater Plains Collaborative Clinical Data Research Network held a gathering of patients, patient advocates and caregivers, along with the academic leaders from each GPC site, in Kansas City on October 16th and 17th. This was a great opportunity for the patients and other non-academics to learn about PCORnet, the CDRN program, and the GPC in general. GPC representatives met face-to-face with one another for discussion on current GPC activites and future goals. We learned during previous Learning Engagement events that attendees who subsequently became involved in other GPC activities and governance more fully understood what PCORnet is all about, which is critical for full participation and contribution.
This year, a large focus of the Learning Engagement Conference was on the GPC’s Pilot Program awardees. The six awardees attended and brought posters on their projects to present at our first Poster Walk. During following breakout sessions we looked at what we had learned about their projects, and how we as the GPC could support and enhance their research. The awardees and their projects are as follows:
- Julie Panepinto, MD (Medical College of Wisconsin): “Building blocks of a learning health system (LHS) for children with sickle cell disease”
- Mary Schroeder, PhD (University of Iowa): “A Pilot Test of an Innovative New Integrated EMR-Cancer Registry-Administrative Claims Data Resource in a Clinical Data Research Network”
- Bradley Brimhall, MD (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio): “Multi-Institution Comparison of Inappropriate Clinical Laboratory Testing Patterns”
- Erin Doren, MD (Medical College of Wisconsin): “Comparison of Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness of Unilateral Mastectomy and Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy with Reconstruction in a Multicenter Cohort (Cancer Cohort)”
- Reem Mustafa, M.B.B.S, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center): “Burden of Imaging in Renal Cysts”
- Neena Sharma, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center): “Opioid and Rehabilitation Following Lumbar Spine Surgery: A Cross Section Study”
